Dear Families

We welcome Marta Simpson, our student teacher, into our classroom. Marta is a student at Augsburg College and she will be with us until spring break.

We also welcome Robin Nelson, dance artist, to our classroom. Robin’s dance residency is part of our school-wide Arts for Academic Achievement grant. We are learning songs and folk-dances, based on our school-wide theme: Balance. Robin will be with each class, five times. We are enjoying our time with her!

We continue our study of patterns. Your child is bringing home his/her Bear Suitcase, today. We have been describing the patterns on fabric and have been
designing our own fabric patterns on clothing for our bears. Ask your child to describe his/her patterns to you.

We are focusing on Leadership, in conjunction with the Martin Luther King holiday. We are discussing “What makes a good leader?” as we read picture books about a variety of leaders. Other guiding questions of this theme, yet to be asked, are “Who are the leaders in my life?” and “How can I be a good leader?” We are beginning with civil rights leaders, including Dr. King, Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks, Rudy Bridges, and Peg-Leg Joe. We will include leaders of a variety of races, cultures, genders, and ages, including children. We also will include presidents, in conjunction with our President’s holiday. We are learning
a song about Dr. King. The AM class, along with Kate’s and Mary’s classes, will sing our song on Friday, at our all-school morning meeting, at 7:35am. We line up to go into the commons at 7:30. Please make sure that your child is at school on time, on Friday. Thanks for your help!

Please note that there is no school on Monday, Jan. 18, for Dr. M.L. King
day, nor on Friday, Jan. 22, which is a teacher workshop day.
