Kristin’s Class Newsletter
January 3, 2010    Clara Barton Open School
****************************************************************
Dear Families,
Happy New Year! I hope you are all refreshed and ready to go back to our school routine. It went fast, didn’t it?
January is always a great month for learning. Students seem to come back from break serious and ready to work. We’ll take some time to catch up with one another and reorient ourselves to school routine,
We have just a couple weeks left with “To Market, To Market.”  Watch for a conference sign up soon!

The Project
You will find attached to this letter another copy of the Demonstration Project that went home in the backpacks before break. If you haven’t started yet it’s ok. We really want students to think of something they know how to do, or perhaps would like to learn about, and then share about it with the class. We won’t be scheduling parents to come in and watch. The sharing is much easier on the students when parents aren’t there! All parents are invited to see the projects on Jan. 14 at 7:45.

Media Permission
I have a few students who don’t have permission for their pictures to be posted on our class website. If this is you, I’m sending a form for you to sign today.

Knitting!
This week we’ll be learning about knitting. We’ll read about sheep, wool and yarn and make our own knitting needles, Our main story for the week is Knitting Nell, a tale of a girl with a soft voice and a passion for knitting. We hope to have everyone knitting in a couple weeks!

Math
Second graders will start the week with a review of several strategies for adding and subtracting two and three digit numbers. Both first and second graders will then be working with repeating patterns that will lead to counting by 2s, 3s ,4s etc. Know what is really great for repeated practice with pattern? Knitting!

Barton Snowman Works
It seems like such a long time ago! Thanks to everyone who helped with our factory. Steve signed our paychecks on Friday, and each child got to take home a set of four snowman coasters. Also on Friday, we all got to make a handmade tile. You’ll see those soon.

Thanks! Kristin
