Join the Leadership Council for the 2017-2018 School Year!

Barton Leadership Council

We are approaching a very exciting year at Barton.  It is a perfect time to be a part of the process and help make Barton more wonderful, stable and progressive.  This year the endorsement process will be an invitation process.  No ballots!  We invite anyone who wants to commit his or her talents and skills to simply join the Leadership Council.

What is the Leadership Council?

Leadership Council is made up of staff, parents and students who work together to support Barton’s mission as an open magnet school. It is a unique platform that fulfills the combined purposes of a site council (state mandated) and a parent/teacher association (PTA).  Serving on the Council gives parents the opportunity to learn more about open and progressive education, understand challenges Barton faces, and advocate for our students.

Who are we seeking?

Barton is an amazingly diverse school.  As Barton’s racial and cultural diversity increases, we want our Leadership Council to reflect the student body.  Diversity can mean a lot of different things and does not end with race and culture.  Barton’s families are diverse in our unique experiences, which reflects how we understand our children and how we communicate.  We seek representation across all of Barton’s cultural groups, range of skills, length of time at Barton, and ages of children at the school.  We are looking for parents who are committed to and enthusiastic about Barton’s open/progressive values and mission, committed to looking at the big picture and pursuing what’s best for all students, and interested in helping set goals, policies and budget decisions.  We are hoping that for the 2017-18 school year we have a council that reflects our families at Barton – equally and fairly.

What does this volunteer work involve?

The Council meets once a month during the school year on Thursday evenings, 4:30-6:30PM.   We ask parents to dedicate time to attend these meetings so we have a consistent and cohesive thinking group.  Last year, the Leadership Council created 5 focus groups:  Health and Wellness, Fundraising, Communications, School Climate-Social Emotional and Progressive Education.  We ask council members to be active in one of the five focus groups.  Outside of regular scheduled meetings, members attend school events and are available to answer questions and share his or her knowledge with other parents.

If you are interested in joining the Leadership Council:

1.         Attend the Leadership Council meeting on May 18 from 5:30-6:30PM.

2.         Review the Leadership Council Contract.  At the May 18 meeting submit the compact including why you want to be on the Leadership Council.

3.                  Submit a photo of yourself, if possible.  Photos are posted on the website to help parents recognize members.  Photos can be emailed to katekramschuster@aol.com (Anything goes – see samples at http://barton.mpls.k12.mn.us/Leadership_Council)

If you are not able to attend the May 18 meeting please submit contract via email to katekramschuster@aol.com or drop it off at the office by May 18 by 2:00 p.m.
