Kindergarten News - March 18, 2015
Wednesday, March 18, 2015 7:55 AM

                                                              March 18, 2015
How did it get to be the middle of March already?
Room 114 families,
Maybe you heard we had a little leprechaun visit on Tuesday?  I will let your child give you all the details but the children were absolutely “gleeful” about the leprechauns telling me, Kate the teacher, to “Take a break, Kate!”, imagine that!
I had the dates for Spring Break incorrect in last week’s letter.  Spring break is from Friday, March 27th through April 3rd.  We are back at school on Monday, March 6th.
We’ve really been working on leprechauns:  building houses, painting houses, making leprechaun furniture and writing leprechaun letters.  Most of the rest of this note explains all the other pieces of paper in your child’s folder today.
Spirit Week
This whole idea came up kind of quick and without much teacher input.  It has not been communicated to me as clearly as I wish but I will give you the information I have found.  Next week is “Spirit Week” at Barton.  Students may participate as families wish.  Every day has a theme:
Monday: Pajama Day
Tuesday: Twin Day (We did not get any explanation about this day but I assume students and a friend decide to dress alike.  I told the class they could also where MN Twins baseball gear if they wished)
Wednesday: this WAS going to be “Get Up and Dance Day”(dance music and dance videos played on the big screen in Commons, classes go down for a half hour and dance during the school day).  Wednesday is also a MAP Science testing day (where the music in Commons would disrupt testing) and the band needs to use the Commons for their usual practice.  I was unable to find out anymore at the time I wrote this note.
Thursday:  Wacky Hair Day
I suggest you look for more info on “Spirit Week” in the upcoming Barton Bugle.  No school on Friday, March  27th.
  Author’s Night
Barton’s tenth annual Author’s Night allows budding and more
experienced writers to read their original work and receive positive feedback from supportive adults and students.  Student who wish to read his or her own written work are assigned to a classroom.  Writers are multi-age; you might have a kindergartener, 3rd grader and upper all reading in the same room. I believe any of the kindergarteners could read their “How To…”books or other stories in their Writers Workshop folders.  Students can also choose to read written work they have done at home.  Author’s Night is on Thursday, April 16th from 6 -7 pm.  If your child wishes to participate please send a note or send an email to me and I will sign them up.  I need to have all the writer’s names by Monday, April 13th so organizers can prepare.  Look in today’s folder for more info.
Portfolio Material Fee
The kindergarten team is revamping the “Memory Book”/ portfolio we have used in the past.  We have decided to use a three ring binder and plastic sheet protectors.  We are asking for $5.00 per student to buy the supplies.  Also if you have any interest in helping make the portfolios, please let Kate know.  Thank you!
Barton Plant Sale Fund Raiser
This Friday at the All School Morning Meeting we will have the Plant Sale kick-off.  I will send the plant order forms home in next Wednesday’s folder.  I know students at the kindergarten level need parent’s help to sell plant orders.  The plants are of really great quality and can also be ordered online.  I have to say that Plant Order pick-up day (Friday, May 8th) is a fun community day at Barton.  Past students and their families return to pick up orders and the entire lower playground is filled with blossoming flowers and green plants.
Community Ed. Class Sign-up
New classes start the week of April 13- 16th.
Scholastic Book Orders
If you wish to order, send orders in by next Thursday, 3/26,books will come after Spring Break.
Barton Yearbook Order Forms

Monday, March 23rd is our last day of Art with Meri. On Tuesday we start Media with Angie.
