Kindergarten News - September 10, 2014

Room 114 Families,

I was glad to see those parents who were able to make it to our classroom last Thursday for Parent Info Night.  If you were unable to attend I have sent the conference day/time choices, parent volunteer opportunities and the packet of information about our kindergarten class, in today’s take-home folder.  If you already signed up for a goal setting conference, I have sent your conference confirmation.

We have a new student as of Monday.  Welcome Abdurhaman Hassan!  (and yes, that means we have 29 kindergarteners in our class!)

If your child did not have their photo taken in August at “Get Connected Day” then Tuesday, Oct. 14th is picture day for them.  I assume we will get photo orders to send home for families that wish to order.  All students get their photo taken for yearbook purposes, even if families do not order photo packages.

Our class has agreed upon the class rules for the school year.  The children thought of these four rules:

  1. Take care of the classroom and the equipment.

  2. Solve problems with words.

  3. Treat other people the way YOU want to be treated.

  4. Listen to the teachers.

Thanks to Sawyer Dodge’s family for volunteering to make us a Class Rules poster to display in the classroom!

We have a new specialist starting on Thursday.  We have Media as our specialist from 9/11 -9/26.  The Media specialist is Angie.

If you signed-up for water-bottle snack cup weekend washing job, your schedule is included in today’s folder.  I still am looking for one more family to volunteer for this job.  I have three families but one more makes it so each family does the job one time a month.  If you wish to volunteer for any of the jobs listed, please send back the form to Kate.  As a rule I do not have parent volunteers right away in September.  It takes the class some time to get routines and relationships established.  The one exception is Monday morning journal help, from 7:30 – 8:00am.  I still need one more person for that job.  I promise to let everyone know when we are ready for visitors!

Several parents told me that their child has a hard time remembering what they did in kindergarten that day.  I will try to give you some topics that may help your child remember what we did that week:

  • Ask about these ”mustache” books, “Moosetache” by Margie Palatini,  “The RunawayBeard” by David Schiller and “Mr. Nash and His Mustache” by James Uyeshiro

  • There is a thief in Mercy Watson’s home!  What did he steal?  Who saw the thief first?

  • What di you do in Art with Meri? (painting and clay)

  • How did your puppet drawing turn out?  What did the class name the puppet?  What does the puppet do to Kate?

  • Who did you sit by in lunch today?  What did you play at recess?

  • What math manipulative do you like to use the most? (linkercubes, geotiles, geoboards with rubber bands, table blocks)

All is going well!  Thanks for getting them to bed on time and up so early!

Thanks to the Silpala family for washing our water bottles and snack cups this weekend!
