Kindergarten News 1/10/14

                                                                  January 10, 2014

Room 114 families,

The sub-below weather gave us a short week so I’ll keep this a short note!

We started one of four- hour lessons with Midwest Food Connection this Thursday. There is a handout in the folder today that gives you some background information on Midwest Food Connection.  The short explanation, “Midwest Food Connection empowers elementary school children to make healthy and responsible food choices.”  The four lessons we are getting are “Cooking Minnesota’s Harvest”.   Yesterday, the children pretended to go back to the past and discovered how families used root cellars to store their garden vegetables for the winter.  Harruko, our guest teacher prepared a root vegetable stew with rutabaga, dinosaur kale and leeks, the recipe is also in the folder today. Everyone tried the vegetables and most of the children liked the stew!  There is also a mini blurb about the next three lessons topics on the Midwest Connection handout.

We also started a new science unit on fabric.  The children will be pulling fabric apart, looking at the weave, weaving yarn to make fabric, staining, washing and dying fabric.

The children are starting to think of something they are an “expert” as a subject for our next writing project, “How To…” books. Some examples for book ideas are:  HOW TO…  do the monkey bars, how to tie a shoe, how to be a rock star!  You get the idea.  Next week the children will figure out 4 or 5 steps one on a page of their book explaining how to….  They will illustrate and then read the book to the class.

We have gym and art until next Wednesday, Jan. 15th when we switch to music in the morning and media in the afternoon.

Star Student this week:  Aiden Tupper

Thanks to the Amundson family for washing our classroom water bottles this weekend!

Remember no school for students next Friday, Jan. 17th.

Enjoy the “heat-wave” this weekend!
