Letter From Admin - Comprehensive District Design

Admin Letter

Dear Barton Families:

We appreciate and honor your thoughtfulness and inquiry shared around the Comprehensive District Design. The Comprehensive District Design contains initial recommendations MPS has offered in improving the education for all our students. Clara Barton Open School is stronger with the support of our families.

We are receiving more and more questions around how Barton Open School may be impacted by the recommendations found in the Comprehensive District Design. Some of the questions are:

  1. Will Barton Open remain a K-8 school?
  2. Will Clara Barton remain an Open, Progressive magnet status?

These questions pertaining specifically to Barton Open School can be understood. We acknowledge that over time, and as models have been shared, some changes have been made after receiving staff and community feedback. Clara Barton Open School is listed within the Comprehensive District Design as a K-8 Open Magnet School. Clara Barton K-8 Open School will remain as a K-8 and as an Open Magnet School in the current model as well as the two proposed models within the plan. The only possible variation will be our attendance zone- whether our site serves the entire Southern Region or serves just one zone of the city. The attendance zone is to be determined.  This updated information, as it is relates to Barton Open, has been confirmed by our Associate Superintendent Brian Zambreno. I have attached to this document, the latest pathways document from MPS.

I hope this letter puts to rest any concerns to the contrary. Certainly things may change, as our Superintendent Graff has said many times, no final decisions have been made. During this phase of planning, we are engaging with communities. As we continue to be informed of and examine various models, Clara Barton Open School remains to be a K-8 Open School Magnet. Please know, I will communicate to the Barton community if ever I hear differently.

Thank you again for your ongoing support as well as advocating for our students, families, and our program

In Partnership,

Diane Bagley
