Minnesota Reading Corps Site
Wednesday, March 14, 2012 6:50 AM

We received the very exciting news that Barton Open School was selected for a second year to be a Minnesota Reading Corps site, and we were also selected to be a Minnesota Math Corps site for the 2012-2013 school year! This means that we will continue to have two full-time Literacy Tutors serving students in grades K-3, and will now have one full-time Math Enrichment Tutor serving students in grades 4-8. What a privilege for us to get this additional support for our students.

We have been very fortunate to have two exceptional Literacy Tutors serving as Reading Corps members this year with Kris Potter and Sari Rosenfield. Kris plans to continue in this role for another year. Sari plans to go back to school, maybe even go into teaching. Therefore, we are now in the process of seeking a new Literacy Tutor to replace Sari next fall, and we are seeking one full-time Math Enrichment Tutor. We are communicating this news at this stage in hopes that through the Barton community we can get the word out that we are looking for two new candidates for this AmeriCorps program, one to serve as a Reading Corps member and the other to serve as a Math Corps member for the 2012-2013 school year.

Minnesota Reading & Math Corps members receive a living allowance of about $500 biweekly, an education award of up to $5,550 and may be eligible to receive health insurance. All necessary training is provided and no licensure is necessary. Please pass the word on to a friend or family member. You can learn more and apply online at or at, and send questions to You are also welcome to contact Kris or Sari and ask questions about their experience this year as Literacy Tutors. Kris can be reached at or 612-790-0823, and Sari can be reached at or 612-578-2865. Thank you in advance for whatever assistance you can provide to help us recruit new members to these programs for next school year.
