News and Notes 10-19-11
Thursday, October 27, 2011 10:10 AM

Hi,

Several reminders:  Swimming starts Monday - please remind your child to pack their swim bags.  10 children do not have their permission slips in for this yet - check last week's News and Notes and you will find an attachment of the slip there if you need a new one.

Tuesday we go to the Ordway.  Since we usually send out permission slips one week ahead that meant that yesterday was the day - not much lead time I am afraid.  Please try to get this back by Monday too.

This past week we worked on reading "Trudy" and learning a bit more about Alzheimer's.  Every day I give the students a prompt to write about that connects to some event in the story.  Ask them what they wrote about a really amazing event they remember attending and about a time when something good came from something bad (a recurring theme in the book).

We also cleaned up the terrariums and moved on to another controlled experiment to test water tolerance for corn, barley, peas, and radish seeds.

Another thing you can chat about is the notion of prepositional phrases - ask what they are, and how they are used to enhance writing - and how you might form a human sculpture to show a preposition.

The week to come:

Monday, Wed. and Thur. we swim at the Y.
Tuesday we go to the Ordway.
Friday the author of "Trudy", Jessica Lee Anderson will be here to chat with the Middles team kids about being an author.

The above events, along with music class and math take up every morning.  In the afternoon we'll be reading and writing about the "Trudy" book and observing our science experiments.

Cheers,

Kathy

P.S.  I will be out on both Thur. and Friday for meetings at the Science Museum.
