The festival committee would like to give a huge thank-you to the Barton community for the amazing turn-out at Barton’s first spring festival! The musicians rocked the stage, the activity stations were hopping the whole time, the food trucks were well devoured, and the sun shone all day. In the weeks since the event, we have been gathering feedback, and many of you said you would like to see it become an annual celebration. So we have already begun the planning for next year!

Math Masters Competition: On Sat., May 6, 14 fabulous and dedicated 5th and 6th grade students participated in the district math competition from 9:00am to 1:30pm.  They are:  Graeme Scott, Max Krueger, Asa Grumdahl, Sam Leslie, Rory Harris, Lillian Ramberg, Evve Jischke, Aoife Mokalla, Keshav Singh, Merik Schaefer, Wes Sumner, Muna Mohamed-Karie, Nadira Yusuf, and Nat Chang-Deutsch.  They, along with several other students, spent over a month on Wed. and Thurs. practicing for this competition.  I am very proud of their efforts and dedication to doing math.  They had lots of fun in the process!!

In another step toward creating an inclusive space, Barton is establishing one, all gender restroom. By 2020 all MPS schools will be reconfigured to create spaces which are accessible to anyone and required by no one.

Dear Barton Families,

As many of you have already been made aware through conversations with your children, (District communication) or other media sources, there is a book and a recently released Netflix series called “13 Reasons Why,” which is focused on a teen dying from suicide and revealing the reasons for her death through a series of tapes. You may have seen commentaries on the series in the press. It’s important for our community to be aware of films, social media, apps and other technology that may have an impact on our kids.

Thank you, everyone! We MADE it!

We have achieved our $15,000 goal in just one week! As of yesterday, donations passed the $10,000 mark. Including the $6,000 match and the extra $910 from Somali Culture Night, this fund drive has reached $16,977.40!! We are even close to being able to restore the teachers’ classroom supply funds to their previous levels, which will lessen the amount our beloved teachers need to dip into their own personal funds.

We have raised $7,327.40 so far! We’ve met the $6,000 match! On top of that, the organizers of the Somali Culture Night FUNdraiser have announced the event raised an additional $910, and they are putting it all toward this urgent fund drive. That brings us to $14,327.40! This is amazing to achieve in less than a week. As 3-4 teacher Patty Campbell said when she heard the news, “Our Barton community is the BEST.”

We are writing today with an urgent request for help to close the gap in Barton’s fundraising for this year. We want to thank you for the Fund donations, the FUNdraiser ticket purchasing, and all the green plants you sold or bought to financially support our school. Your involvement and support at Barton is what makes our progressive school strong and focused on the whole child.  Despite these efforts, the Barton Foundation is still at least $15,000 behind what is needed to fully fund the programs and services it usually supports.

Barton Community Ed.'s Summer Sampler registration is being placed in teacher mailboxes today and will be available online this evening! Classes will take places the weeks of May 15th and May 22nd. Our hours of operation are from 2:00-3:30, Monday through Thursday and classes vary by week and day.  Kids are already talking about the Kendama class (only offered this spring). Unfortunately there is no bussing due to Transporation's cut off date.

AND see Uppers in their natural habitats -- hanging out with each other, heads down, thumbs flying, at a dance with a DJ. It's ONE DAY ONLY--just an hour or two! A perfect way to volunteer. Parents, Minneapolis Public Schools Health Services has moved completely to electronic records. The health office retains no paper copies of records, including sports physicals. If you think your child may be participating in a sport, please keep a paper copy at home.  Although any physical exam you turn in will be entered into the electronic record, the coaches generally want copies of the original paper form. If you do not have a copy at home, you can call your clinic and ask them to send you a copy.

New! Barton Spring Festival – Save the Date!

Mark your calendars to celebrate Barton’s inaugural Barton Spring Festival! Created to happen in conjunction with plant sale pick-up, this festival will be held at Barton on Friday, May 12, 2:30-7 pm. The new festival makes the most of this already-existing great gathering and turns it into a social celebration of our wonderful community, complete with food trucks, live music, and activity stations hosted by staff, parents and students. Barton’s spring session of after school activities will begin Monday, March 13th.  Registration materials have been given to classroom teachers to distribute.  Registration can be completed easily online at  Once on the website families can complete a search for Barton.  From that search you can select “Catalogue” on the right hand side and then choose “After School Youth Enrichment Spring 2017” as an option.  Please note that any bus requests must be submitted at least 10 days prior to the session starting.  Please contact Dawn in Community Ed. at 612.668.3585 with any questions.

Some students rely on the school district for breakfast and lunch. Canceling school may cause some families hardships related to finding childcare. Canceling school is an exception and we do everything possible to keep schools open.

Volunteers Still Needed for Student Author Night - Tuesday March 28, 2017 6:00-7:00 p.m. We are still in need of room facilitators for the evening. If you are interested, please contact Danielle Sells 612-377-5932, In this role, you would facilitate the order of readers and conversation about the work during the actual event --we have a handout for this and many of you have done this before. This also includes restoring the room, moving chairs back. (you can take a picture of the room so you know how to rearrange it afterwards). (facilitators will be assigned to same room as kids). Any help pulling this together before hand is much appreciated.

Dear Eighth Grader and Family,

Minneapolis Public Schools would like to invite you to be a Fast Track Scholar this summer!  This exciting program provides current 8th grade (going into 9th) students with the opportunity to meet new high school classmates and begin earning high school elective credits.  The goal is to prepare students for a smooth transition to high school. In order to participate, students must meet ALC criteria such as not meeting grade level academic standards, English Language Learner, or having inconsistent school attendance which significantly impacts achievement. AVID students also qualify to attend Fast Track Scholars, and teachers/counselors may recommend students.

Barton's African American Family Involvement Day

Barton’s African American Family Involvement Day is being held next Monday, Feb. 13 from 8:00-10:00 a.m., in the Commons. Please join us for light refreshments from 8:00-8:45 a.m., followed by a program in the Commons starting at 8:45 a.m. Our program will include: a STEP performance, Somali storytelling, Maya Angelou poems read by students, a drum performance, as well as singing and dancing. We hope to see you there!

Open invite for 7th and 8th Grade Girls

Hello Field, Ramsey and  Barton 7th and 8th grade girl softball players

 It’s been announced by the Minneapolis School District that there will be no softball offered by the Middle Schools for the upcoming 2017 season.  But there is answer for those girls who want to play this spring.

Minneapolis Washburn over the last 2 years has offered three softball teams. Washburn is looking at adding a fourth softball team for those 7th and 8th grade girls who are planning to attend Washburn in the future and currently don’t have a place to play. Minnesota State High School rules allow 7th and 8th girls the ability to play sports at the High School level.

Free Dental Services for Uninsured

We have just received word that Children’s Dental Services has been funded by Delta Dental to provide cleaning, scaling, sealants and fluoride application to uninsured persons. There will be no charge to you.  Services will be provided at the Dr. John Williams Specialty Dental Center, located at 728 East Hennepin Avenue, Minneapolis, and will be available from 8:30 to 5:00 on the following days: February 1st – 3rd, 6th – 10th, 13th – 17th, 21st, 22nd, and 27th.

We were honored to have Superintendent Graff visit Barton School today.  He was able to visit  classrooms, speak to students, see their work, learned to salsa, experience portfolio sharing, and spoke with teachers, administration, and our Leadership Chair, Sheila.  We had a full morning and extended an invitation to return to Barton in the near future.

Parents, we recently had a survey where two questions were asked:  Do you read the Bugle on a regular basis?  Would you prefer a paper copy of the Bugle?  We received 134 responses and 91% of those who responded they read the Bugle on a regular basis.  Seventy-eight percent of the responses would not like a paper copy.  We sent a paper survey as well as an electronic copy to gather survey results.  Thank you for completing the survey and for your comments.  A list of comments was presented the Leadership Council on 1/19/17.
