The News From Room 209
September 14, 2012

Friday Architects

Did you hear the one about the 2 teachers who brought bags of spoons to school? They were trying to make a point! Well, 3 points, actually. Teaspoon, baby spoon, slotted spoon, ladle, olive spoon, olive ladle, sugar spoon, souvenir spoon, to mention only a few of the spoons featured in the
Great Spoon Challenge!
All members of the “spoon family” with variations; variations in size, shape, color, material (that’s form), and in function!

The followup homework assignment asks each student to create a Form and Function Collection with variations. The description is attached to this email. The assignment is due next Friday, 9/21.

Stamp Club
Thursday was the first meeting of the Barton Stamp Club. We were treated to a theatrical presentation of “What is Stamp Club.” The play was written and presented by Graham, Isaac, Luke, Mason, Mona, Skyler and Taj. Our membership campaign was a success! All of the new students signed up. Next week’s topic: Soaking (to get stamps off the paper from the envelope.)

Art Adventures
I still need volunteers for the Art Adventures program. At this time no one has signed up for room 209. You do not need to have a background in art. You will be well trained and supported.
This volunteer position entails:
• attending a 2.5 hour training session at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts
(Tuesday, 10/9 from 10:30 - 1 OR Thursday, 10/25.
• leading classroom sessions to review reproductions of art pieces (November); dates to be
determined by classroom teacher and volunteers
• join us on the MIA tour in December
• usually volunteers work in pairs

In the Backpack …
