Kristin’s Class Newsletter
October 18, 2010   Clara Barton Open School   612-695-5410
Dear Families,
Last week we read fairy stories about weaving. There are lots! Some were well known, like the Emperor’s New Clothes, and The Wild Swans. Others were new to us, like Clever Ali and Clever Anaeet. We’re getting ready to weave some stories of our own this week, in preparation for the Author’s Tea on the 29th.
It’s a short week, so we won’t send home spelling or homework. We’ll be doing some word sorts to get us ready to work with Words Their Way. (Steve wrote a nice article about it in the Bugle last week.)   We’ll add words to sort to next week’s homework, along with directions for working with them at home.
We’re continuing to focus on Number Sense. Our number books are coming along nicely. Every child has grown in their ability to completely describe a given number. You’ll see the final products at our author’s tea.
Here are some FAQs about options:
*what is it? A mini course taught by teachers or students.
*when? During school, the last hour on Wednesdays.
*who? Kids in grades 1-6, teachers, volunteers
*why? It’s an open school thing! Kids get to take a mini-course they are interested in, teachers get to teach to an interested audience. It mixes us up in new ways, and gives students a chance to be teachers.
*How?  Forms went home last week. Help your child make 4 choices; he or she will get one. We’ll find out who got what on options day.
Please email or call if you have questions or concerns about options.
Student Teachers
Well, we said goodbye to Katherine and we’ll sure miss her. Don’t worry, though! We’ve got Mai and Katie from the U of M on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, and we’ll also have some Augsburg Literacy students a couple mornings a week. Next Monday, Holly Huelster joins the class full time and will be with us for 7 weeks, full time. It’s great to have enthusiastic, helpful college kids helping us learn.
Watch the Weather!
Make sure you send a jacket for recess. It’s chilly out t and kids spend ½ hour outside. Thanks! Kristin
