Children hear examples of good literature and fluent reading.  Aspects of genre and story structure are discussed.  Children are exposed to rich vocabulary, thus expanding their vocabulary and becoming better readers.

The best way to become a better reader is to practice each day, with books the reader chooses at his just-right (at least 95% fluency) reading level.  The language we use for this in the classrooms is 'good fit books'.  Our hope is for this to become a habit for children.
