Self-Carry Medications for Secondary Students No Longer Accepted for 7th and 8th Graders

Health Update

The Minneapolis school district legal department has determined that a secondary student is a student in 9th through 12th grade only.  In the past, the Barton health office has accepted medication forms signed by a parent, but without a medical provider signature, allowing 7th and 8th grade students to self-carry and self-administer non-prescription pain medication, like ibuprofen and Tylenol.  We will no longer be accepting these forms.   If your student needs any medication at school, including all over-the- counter medication, the form titled, Authorization for Administration of Medication at School, will be required.  The form needs to be completed, signed and dated by a licensed medical provider, and also needs to be signed and dated by you, the parent/guardian.  That form can be found on the Barton website, under the “Parents” tab in the left side bar.  Click on Health Office and go to Commonly Used Forms.  - Karen Ward, RN, Barton School Nurse
