Middles Play on Anti-Bullying

5th and 6th graders at Barton Open School worked with artists-in-residence from the Youth Performance Company (YPC) and from Barton to produce a play about the different kinds of bullying that can occur in and around a school. The play was performed on May 24, 2013 and focused on giving students strategies on how to prevent bullying by standing up for themselves, telling adults about the problem and standing up for each other. The play involved acting, set design, singing and dancing created by both artists and 5th and 6th grade students to convey a powerful anti-bullying message to our community.

Final Elderbuddies Visit

These are wonderful photos of your children and their elder buddies. Thank you Jessica for photos that really convey the feelings between our buddies and 206 students. They'll miss us. We'll miss them. The elders also raised $100 for our class to have a pizza party or some such event. That was a great surprise. Many elders expressed very warm feelings about our students, and many felt they had a renewed hope in the future of the world, based on getting to know the class! Sadly, one student's elder buddy passed away a little bit ago, but that student bravely accepted that inevitable milestone and will remember his elder for the puzzles he made just for him and the knowledge he passed on to him.

Simple Machines

On Thursday, April 18, 2013, while it snowed outside, in our classroom we had 8 stations set up that small groups of students used to measure a load with a scale, record data and then interpret it.

Minnesota Zoo Field Trip

The Middles made a field trip to the Minnesota Zoo in the snow on March 18, 2013.  See photos.

Candlelight Cafe

The annual Room 206 Candlelight Cafe was a big success!  The students performed the play Who's Afraid of the Big, Bad Wolf? by Joe Sadowski (former Barton parent), based on the story The True Story of the Three Little Pigs by A. Wolf by Jon Scieszka.  See the video on YouTube.
