The Great Amaryllis Race
The bulbs have been weighed and measured, planted and watered, and now the race is on! Whose bulb will begin to grow first? Which bulb will grow the tallest? Whose will blossom first? The suspense is beginning to build. The contestants are all vying for time on the grow cart. This is a highly competitive event.

The Great Amaryllis Race is an integrated science, math and arts unit. Growth data will be recorded 3 times each week on a bar graph and in a weekly scale drawing. Observational drawing techniques are being taught to support this. The parts of a plant and how a plant grows and reproduces are the science topics.

I was able to provide each student with a bulb and other supplies thanks to a generous donation by the Mason’s (Patty’s husband is a member of this organization.)

Book Project
The homework assignment that your child will bring home this week is a book project. There has been time at school to read independently (while I have been conducting individual reading assessments). Reading the selected book was also the homework for last week. While reading, the focus was to identify character traits with supporting evidence, to consider how the character changed over the course of the novel, and to identify major events. The assignment involves not only the reading, but also writing and a bit of art work and gathering artifacts (or pictures) that help to tell the story. Complete directions will come home on Wednesday.

I will begin scheduling conferences starting the week of February 25. I have attached a list of dates and times. Please select at least 2 times that will work with your schedule. You can email me your selections and I will let you know when I have your conference scheduled. I will add more dates and times later in the month.

It is not too late to purchase a yearbook. The cost is $30 and you can send a check to me or drop one off in Chuck’s mailbox in the office. Be sure to include your student’s name and homeroom.
