Room 114 Families,

We are really counting down the days left of school (it’s 8 ).   We are finishing up projects and the children are even doing some writing and drawing for their first grade teacher for next year!  The children traditionally draw a self-portrait and write about two things they wish their next teacher should know about them.   You will receive a copy of their work but the original writing and drawing sample is part of longitudinal folder that is added to every year and follows your child grade from grade through 8th grade.

You should find an invitation for our Portfolio and Memory Book Sharing event your child’s folder today.  If you are a new Barton family you may not know that we do not give report cards grades K-6, middle school students do receive grades for their work.  Instead of a report card you and your child will be looking at their body of work throughout their kindergarten year.  Teachers write a narrative about each student’s learning during the school year.  This narrative is on the last third of the student’s goal setting recording sheet that we used at each conference.  You will also be able to look through you child’s writing and math work and see reading assessments that your child has worked on through out the school year.  The most up to date reading assessment is given to the 1st grade teacher, but you do get a record of the Fountas and Pinnell Reading level that your child is currently reading at.

I hope that every kindergartener can have at least one family member come to the Portfolio and Memory book event next Thursday, May 30th from 7:30 – 9am.  Stop in before work, have a bagel and coffee or juice and look at all the hard work and learning your “soon to be 1st grader” has to show you!  It is an “open house” type event, drop in for as long as fits your schedule.  If parents are unable to attend please let Kate know and we can get older siblings in the building or staff members to meet with your child. Parents can take all portfolios and Memory books home that day.

We are staring to visit all the 1st/2nd grade classrooms and teachers.  Even though the children don’t know which classroom they will be in next year it still allows them to meet all the teachers and see where each classroom is.  Our “brief visits” start tomorrow.  We will stop in to see Linda, Kristin and Dawn and the other three classrooms another time.

We will meet with our Buddies this Friday, if the weather is nice we will go outside with them.  Our last meeting with our Big Buddies will be next Wednesday where the kindergarteners will show a their memory books to their Big Buddies as a kind of dry run for the next day.

We will work with Haruko from the Midwest Food Connection on Friday morning.  The student’s plants are thriving and last week they taste blueberries and learned about composting to make rich soil and planning a garden strategically to make the most of the sun.

Have a great Memorial Day weekend, remember, no school on Monday, May 27th.
