Wild Rumpus Book Fair Sets New Records for Barton!
Wednesday, November 19, 2014 9:00 AM

Thank you, Barton!! It was a Wild Rumpus indeed! The teachers’ and specialists’ baskets were shopped, the animals chased, and the cookies disappeared faster than they could be refilled. Due to all the support throughout the Barton community – from those who helped create and promote the event, to the stellar volunteers at the fair, to those who shopped – Barton didn’t just surpass our previous records. We hit them out of the park:
• Our previous record for books purchased and donated was 143 books, set in 2012. This year Barton families and friends purchased a whopping 315 books to donate to teachers and specialists!!
• Our previous record for store credit earned from the day’s sales was $1,427, set in 2007. This year we raised $2,374 in credit to buy more books! A huge thank-you to Wild Rumpus for donating a percentage of its sales from the day and to all who shopped!

Remember! If you bought books to donate, please bring them in ASAP so students can start using them right away.

Parent coordinators Martha Brennecke, Amy Langanki, and Fiona Pradhan are incredibly grateful to everyone who helped make this such a success:

First, the wonderful Uppers Choir led by Lisa Skaff, who dedicated their entire afternoon to provide hours of beautiful entertainment. They attracted a great crowd of shoppers and brought such enthusiasm and excitement to the event! The Uppers Choir made our school proud! Many thanks to all their parents who supported their participation at this special off-site Barton event.

Teacher Patty Campbell, who brainstormed publicity ideas with us early in the planning and then later brainstormed with her classroom of 3rd and 4th graders to create a Top 10 list for the Bugle.

Music director Lisa Skaff, who not only immediately agreed to take on the musical entertainment for the event with the Uppers Choir, but she also wrote a parody of “All About That Bass” and taught three classes to sing “All About the Books” at November’s all-school morning meeting. Thank you to all the third and fourth graders in Patty, Rebecca and Jaci’s classes for your performance!! You helped rally the school for the fair!

The students who helped with posters, flyers and PA announcements: Ava and Oliver Langanki, Tara Pradhan, Nico Schaust, Ena Ungerman, Leo Veasey, and multiple students in Meri’s art room.

All who helped make the communications pieces happen: Katy Marsnik and Brittany Alexander in the office, who helped with Bugle articles and PA announcements. Brenda Johnson, who got the school-wide email out the day before the event and designed it to look both tantalizing and easy to navigate. And thanks, of course, to our principal, Paul Scanlon, for all his support from beginning to end.

Our event volunteers who helped guide people through the book baskets and served lemonade and cider and every cookie down to the last crumb. You made the fair run smoothly and seamlessly! Anne Sateren Burow, Sarah Cooper-Evans, Jeni Heineman, Karma Hughes, Anna Levine, Laura Morrill, Mel Muller, Michele Nealen, Jerri Clark Wagner, Sara-Jane Wilson, Marcy Zerwes.

As you can see, this truly is a Barton community event! If you have any questions or would like to help next year, contact parent coordinators Amy Langanki,, or Fiona Pradhan,
