Word Wall Information

Dear Families,

One of the tools we are using for teaching spelling this year is a Word Wall.  The Word Wall is an alphabetical listing of the words that occur with the greatest frequency in our language.  The 100 most frequently used words make up 50% of all words used in adult writing!  Knowing these words quickly, effortlessly, and automatically gives students opportunities to think about the content of their writing rather than having to struggle over the spelling of a word.  These words can be studied like addition and subtraction facts; they just need to be studied like addition and subtraction facts; they just need to be memorized and spelled correctly all the time.  We are doing lots of games and activities at school to help kids learn these words and we are asking parents to review them at home.  We started with just five of the words and we will add another five each week.  Sometimes we will send home games or activities that will help support the learning of these words.  We will also send home on Wednesdays, the list of words that have been covered so far.  The children will highlight 5 new words for the week.  Don't return the lists to school - recycle them at the end of each week.  You might want to keep the list in your car to review with your child while you are running errands.  Our goal is for first graders to be able to read the words; second graders should be able to read and spell the words.
